History

Nepean was named in honour of Sir Evan Nepean, head of the colonial branch of the British Home Office.

Nepean's first permanent settler came to the area in 1810. However, it was the building of the Rideau Canal that boosted settlement in the township. The first settlers farmed and worked on the lumber drives in the winter. From 1889 to 1950 significant amounts of land from Nepean were annexed by Ottawa. These annexations decreased both the area and population of Nepean. Despite the annexations, growth was not hindered. Nepean became attractive to people seeking a suburban lifestyle, and the community later attracted manufacturing firms in the high technology sector. Six industrial or business parks have been developed, concentrated primarily along the Rideau River. In 2001 Nepean was finally engulfed by its larger neighbour.

Recreational Activities

Nepean is in the National Capital’s Greenbelt and therefore home to a multitude of parks, green spaces, wooded areas for biking and walking trails as well as golf courses, beaches, and more. The active community recreational centres such as Nepean Sports Complex, Walter Baker Centre and others offer a wide range of activities, camps, and classes for every age group. In addition, there are many private sports clubs for soccer, hockey, baseball, basketball, and even sailing at the Nepean Sailing Club in the summer.

The Centrepointe Theatre is a large performing arts centre offering a variety of programs from music to theatre and children’s’ shows etc. and the Nepean Creative Arts Centre offers many courses and camps in a variety of visual arts as well as dance and music studios. In addition, the Ottawa Public Library has branches at Centrepointe and the Ruth Dickinson at the Walter Baker Complex. The large Cineplex Cinemas Ottawa can be found on Carling Avenue and there is also a good size theatre in neighbouring Barrhaven.

Shopping and Dining

From shopping plazas to big box retail stores, numerous shopping malls such as Bayshore, Meadowlands, Merivale, and Carlingwood to smaller shops and speciality boutiques, Nepean has everything you need for your shopping needs. Grocery stores are abundant as well as medical and dental clinics and other necessary services.

Any type of cuisine you desire can be found in a Nepean restaurant. There are ethnic options, family friendly, mom and pop eateries, and chain establishments. As the area expands, more businesses are opening and you will never have a shortage of new restaurants to try out.

Nepean real estate is bordered by the Ottawa River to the north, the Rideau River east to Bells Corners west, Robertson Road and Hunt Club to the south, and Herzberg/Eagleson to the west. It is approximately 20-25 minutes to downtown Ottawa and 15 minutes to Ottawa International Airport. It is well serviced by OC Transpo bus routes which make travelling to any part of the city easy and quick. There are also Park and Rides at Fallowfield and Strandherd stations for downtown commuters. The VIA rail station at Fallowfield is one of the city’s two train stations.
