History

First settled as March Township in the early 1800s, the area remained largely agricultural until developer Bill Teron chose to create a “garden city” of individual communities in the 1960s, starting with Beaverbrook.

Teron’s vision was to create clusters of housing in distinct communities, with a town centre and generous natural spaces in between them. Although he never finished his vision, the suburb continued to grow, ultimately being incorporated as the City of Kanata in 1978 before eventually amalgamating with Ottawa in 2001.

Recreational Activities

Kanata real estate offers many recreational options for all. For families with an active lifestyle, there are an abundance of parks and trails for walking and cycling. Kanata Recreational Complex is just one of a few activity centres which have programs for families and children as well as fitness rooms and 2 full-size arenas for hockey. You can also put your mini-golf skills to the test at Blackbird Falls Putting Course. In the winter, enjoy snow activities such as a toboggan hill and skating rinks at The Kanata Recreation Complex in addition to countless Summer activities.

When it comes to entertainment, you and the kids will enjoy Hockey games—and some of the biggest names in entertainment—at the 18,000 seat Canadian Tire Centre, which is home to the Ottawa Senators NHL Hockey Team. This arena is also the venue for concerts, other sporting events, comedy shows, the monster car truck show, Disney on ice, and many others.

Kids will love the Xtreme Trampoline park and Kids Kingdom indoor playground. Kanata also has two locations of the Ottawa Public Library. Landmark Cinemas is the largest in Ottawa with 24 screens as well as an IMAX theatre. While, adults will be able to have their fun at the Crazy Horse, Options Jazz Lounge at the Brookstreet Hotel, and various pubs and bars located throughout the area.

Shopping and Dining

Kanata real estate has everything you need for your shopping needs with big-box retailers such as Walmart, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Best Buy and others. Kanata Centrum is Ottawa’s third largest shopping centre. This outdoor mall has over 81 brand name stores and 28 different restaurants. In addition, the recently built Tanger Outlet has over 75 designer stores, speciality shops, and food venues.

Grocery stores such as Loblaws, Metro, and Sobeys are also located in Kanata and if you don’t feel like cooking there are a wide variety of restaurants to suit every taste and budget.

Communities and Property

With a population of over 117,000, Kanata is home to all types of residents from families to empty nesters to single professionals, many of whom work in the high tech field.
